About Us

HomoGrown Honey is a women-owned, queer-operated artisanal honey business serving the Philadelphia and Reading markets. We specialize in producing premium, unfiltered raw honey through sustainable beekeeping practices that prioritize bee welfare over maximum yield. Our mission centers on ethical beekeeping that maintains the natural integrity of honey while supporting healthy bee populations. We believe in quality over quantity, sustainable harvesting, and preserving the beneficial properties that make raw honey a superior product.

We serve health-conscious consumers and local food enthusiasts who value artisanal quality, ethical production, and supporting LGBTQIA+ and women-owned businesses.

Head Beekeeper, Carissa Moncavage

In addition to running HomoGrown Honey, Carissa serves as a Board Member and Secretary of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild, which encourages and promotes urban beekeeping through fellowship and education. Carissa also serves as a Board Member and Secretary of the Chester County Beekeepers Association (CCBA), a 500-member organization of beekeepers located throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. She co-founded the CCBA’s Women’s Bee Group, which spearheads educational programming and promotes an open exchange of ideas among all beekeepers. She is also a member of the Eastern Apicultural Society. Through these organizations, Carissa has worked to mentor new beekeepers, assist longtime beekeepers, advocate for environmentally sound, science-based beekeeping practices, and continually improve her own beekeeping skills.

Our Commitment to Quality

Raw & Unfiltered: We never heat-treat or filter our honey, preserving all natural enzymes, pollen, antioxidants, and beneficial compounds that are typically destroyed in commercial processing.

Seasonal Availability: Our commitment to sustainable harvesting means honey availability is limited to annual harvest cycles. Once inventory is depleted, our local honey enthusiasts must wait until the following season.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our beekeeping approach is our remarkable success in overwintering our colonies. Thanks to our small-scale, sustainable practices, we have achieved 100% overwintering success, a testament to our commitment to nurturing healthy bees.
